General Insurance - On Staying Awake

Sleepy Drivers Cause Accidents

11/12/2010
There are a number of reasons why people get into car accidents. From driving impaired to sending text messages, many collisions are the result of poor decisions, including the often-overlooked choice to not get enough sleep.
With people trying to cram more and more into their busy schedules, some people skimp on rest in an attempt to accomplish more. However, doing so can put the motorist and others on the road at risk.
Pennsylvania acting Insurance Commissioner Robert Pratter says it's important for motorists to recognize when they are too tired to be driving.
"Driving drowsy, fatigued, or exhibiting sleeping behaviors are among the top 10 reasons that insurance companies note cause auto accidents and their related claims," says Pratter. "Studies show the risk of an accident doubles after just four hours on the road and drivers often fail to recognize drowsiness early enough."
Motorists will find their car insurance premiums rising if they get into an accident. Not speeding or running red lights can help reduce the likelihood of a collision, as well.
